(Ordinarily I wouldn't post about a project that has no end product available to download, but given the recent kerfuffle going on in the Dios Mios topic I thought it was prudent to give a peek behind the curtain.)
WHAT: Devolution is a loader designed to run gamecube games on a wii. Dolphin was the codename for the gamecube, Revolution was the codename for the wii, add them together = Devolution.
WHY: To do what the "official" method doesn't. I hate GC controllers and the crappy little discs. And if you bought a new model wii you can't play NGC games at all.
WILL: Devolution aims to let you do the following:
- Use alternative mediums for loading games (SD and USB)
- Use alternative controllers (wiimote + classic controller instead of GC controller)
- Use alternative mediums as memory cards (SD, USB and NAND)
- Support audio streaming games properly. It's possible but remains to be seen if it's feasible i.e. if the hardware is going to be fast enough to do what I have in mind.
Alternative loading mediums are already implemented (that's right, working GC USB loading!). Memory card emulation is half-done (reading, no write support). Wiimote and audio streaming support haven't been started.
WON'T: It's not going to be a warez loader. You will need to own (or at least possess) the games you wish to run. I don't plan to ask for any donations, although at some point if there's a particular game that someone wants fixed I might have to insist they provide it or at least the means for me to get it; I'm not going to fork out for a copy of MGS from my own pocket, for example.
HOW: It's complicated (but not impossible!). Basically the wii is a gamecube with extra bits, as long as NGC games can see the hardware they expect to see the extra parts don't matter. One big advantage of Devolution is that it doesn't require any changes to the software on your wii; no replacing MIOS, no extra cIOS or channels, just an app to run from either HBC or the exploit of your choice.
WHO: Me alone. This is a solo project and everything is written from scratch; no "borrowed" code or even any use of libogc. This might change in the future when I want a bluetooth stack. Though the point is this has nothing to do with any other project (my past work or anyone else's) and no, there is no GPL code used so don't bother trying to demand to see the source.

THIRD STEP
What you need
SD/USB (2GB or larger)
GC memory card
Internet Connection
Softmodded Wii
Latest Homebrew Channel
PSO Disk
PSO Manual (On the back is your Serial Number and Access Key)
Download the package from the top
Then place the files in the corresponding location
Start CleanRip and rip the PSO disk
Then make sure that the iso is in the games directory on the USB or SD
When the SD/USB (USB in the slot closest to the edge) is reinserted restart the homebrew channel.
Then run Devolution
When Devolution is loaded, press X for loading from the USB or Y from the SD.
Once loaded the disk drive will flash several times and the game should load.
Press Start and press play online
It will go through some configuration settings
press edit
now configure the setting to the same below
- Tone dialing
- No outside line
- Set line timeout to 99 minutes
- No additional AT commands
- User ID (case sensitive): DEVO
- Password (case sensitive): gc
Note that this is NOT your PSO password, that is separate.
- Phone Number; In the first slot type 1 and press OK
- DNS server address:leave as automatic
- No Proxy server information
once set up it will ask you to buy a hunter license.
press back and press play online again.
You will be able to select your character.
after that set up your PSO serial number and access key (Found on the back of the manual)
after that it will ask for a password (i recommend the access key or something easy to remember)
Then once the account is fully set up you can access the server.
When on the game, you will choose a ship, Since the SCHTServ is one server the ship suitable for gamecube play is Elouise, this ship only has gamecube files and on other ships you cannot join a game.
Notes
If the game does not save correctly, you could lose all the items in your inventory, i suggest putting them in the bank on offline mode.
Sometimes you will hardly find anyone to play with but play on the Elouise ship, other ships crash your game and delete your inventory.
If the game displays GC already in use error, send your serial number and access key to schtserv@gmail.com Please remove the hyphens to help speed up the process. it should take upto two days
You can also use this method to download the extra offline quests
If the game takes you back to the HomeBrew channel or the wii menu. there is something wrong in your system files.
I cannot help with this, i simply do not have the time and my Wii is like a custom setup.
